An opera house is a type of salle de spectacle designed mainly for opera, while a salle de spectacle can host many kinds of performances. In front of the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège stands a statue of the composer André Grétry, whose heart is preserved inside its base.
The opera house performs works by famous composers, including La Traviata and Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi, Carmen by Georges Bizet, Faust, and The Flying Dutchman by Richard Wagner, as well as rare operas.
The building is designed in a neoclassical style, inspired by Greek and Roman architecture, with a symmetrical façade, columns, and arches. Inside, it has an Italian-style auditorium with horseshoe-shaped seating, balconies, and boxes for good acoustics and visibility. It also includes a large stage, modern technical equipment, and an elegant grand foyer. This mix of historic design and modern technology makes the opera house both beautiful and functional.
